About Limerick Racecourse

Limerick Racecourse is a racecourse which can be found in the city of Limerick, on the West coast of Ireland. While racing has been going on in Limerick since 1790, the venue has changed throughout the years. This new Limerick Racecourse was opened in 2001 and was the first purpose built racecourse in Ireland in 50 years.

Only being built as recently as 2001 has done wonders for the facilities at Limerick Racecourse. Everything is brand new and modern. There’s private suites, bars, restaurants, as well as plenty of sports and social clubs. Limerick Racecourse isn’t just about the horse racing – it has everything else as well!

Limerick Racecourse features both flat and national hunt racing throughout the year. The track is ran right handed with a distance of around one mile three furlongs. This track is in the shape of an oval and offers no special features other than this.

Notable races

Limerick Racecourse can boast that it has a couple of notable races throughout the year which should get fans of the sport quite excited. The most important of them all however takes place in at the end of the year. This is during the Limerick Christmas Festival, which is a four day event made up of national hunt racing.

The most notable of all these races takes place on St Stephen’s Day. The race on this day is the Greenmount Park Novice Chase: a grade two race taking place over two miles and three furlongs. This is a race which is only open to horses aged four or older.

All in all there’s a lot to like about Limerick Racecourse. The facilities they have on offer are state of the art making for a fantastic day out. Plus there’s many notable races featuring some of the biggest horses in Irish racing!
